The honest version
Flying straight into Leh at 3,500 m is the most common way to get altitude sickness. Driving in from Srinagar spreads the climb over two days, with a night in Kargil, and passes through Drass and the moonscape at Lamayuru on the way.
From Leh the classic circuit is Nubra over Khardung La and Pangong over the Shyok route or Chang La. We sequence it by altitude: a rest day in Leh first, the high passes after.
The Srinagar–Leh road is usually open from around April or May to November, depending on snow on Zojila. Outside that window, Ladakh is by air only.
