How to Dress for Kashmir Cold: The 3-Layer Rule
Never rely on a single thick coat. In Kashmir, mountain wind chills and heated indoor rooms demand adjustable layering.
Thermal Innerwear
Sits directly against your skin to wick sweat away. Decathlon Forclaz MT500 Merino Wool or synthetic thermals keep you dry. Never use pure cotton in snow.
Fleece or Wool Sweater
Traps warm air generated by your body. Quechua MH100/MH500 fleece jackets provide lightweight warmth without restricting movement on shikaras or slopes.
Wind & Waterproof Parka
Blocks howling winds, freezing drizzle, and heavy snow. Look for a hooded parka with taped seams and water-repellent coating.
What to Buy Before Travelling vs What to Rent Locally
Honest advice from our Srinagar operations team. Avoid spending ₹5,000+ on bulky snow gear you will only use for 3 hours.
Best Rented in Kashmir (Tangmarg / Gulmarg / Sonamarg)
- ✓Knee-High Snow Gumboots (₹150–₹250/day): Rent at Tangmarg before climbing to Gulmarg. Saves suitcase space and weight.
- ✓Waterproof Snow Suit / Jacket (₹250–₹350/day): Perfect for 1 day of snow play, sledging, or skiing.
- ✓Ski Equipment & Helmets (₹800–₹1,500/day): Complete skis, poles, and certified instructor packages in Gulmarg.
- ✓Sledges & Sledging Equipment: Hired on the spot at registered union stands.
Always Buy Before Flying (Bring from Home)
- ✓Thermal Innerwear (Top & Bottom): Sits against skin; personal hygiene and fitted sizing are essential.
- ✓Merino Wool / Thermal Socks: You need 4–6 clean pairs to swap out if feet get damp.
- ✓Waterproof Snow Gloves & Beanie: Rented gloves are frequently damp from previous guests. Bring your own dry pairs.
- ✓UV400 Polarized Sunglasses: Prevents corneal glare burn on glaciers and snow slopes.

Kashmir Packing Checklist, Season by Season
Because elevation varies from 1,585 m in Srinagar to 3,980 m at Apharwat Peak in Gulmarg, mountain temperatures diverge sharply from valley weather. Here is what goes on the list through the year. For clothing advice, shrine dress codes and the documents and SIM rules, read our what to wear in Kashmir guide.
Winter & Chillai Kalan (December, January, February)
-10°C to 8°C · Heavy SnowChillai Kalan runs from 21 December to 31 January. Expect frozen water pipes, thick morning frosts, and deep snowpack in Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Wear 2 complete sets of thermal base layers, a dense fleece mid-layer, and a hooded waterproof parka. Keep power banks in warm interior pockets because sub-zero air cuts phone battery life by 70%.
Spring & Tulip Season (March and April)
4°C to 20°C · Blooming MeadowsMarch transitions from winter cold to spring thaw. Srinagar afternoons are sunny and pleasant (around 16°C), but early mornings and evenings remain chilly (4°C). The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opens in late March to mid-April. Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 still holds excellent snow for skiing and snowmobiles.
Summer Holiday Season (May, June, July, August)
14°C to 31°C · Lush GreeneryPleasant summer weather attracts families and honeymooners across the country. Daytime in Srinagar reaches 28°C–31°C, requiring light cotton shirts, sun hats, and sunglasses. However, higher valleys like Doodhpathri, Aru Valley, and Sonamarg drop to 12°C in the evenings. July and August can bring brief mountain rain showers.
Autumn Golden Leaves (September, October, November)
2°C to 24°C · Golden ChinarsSeptember offers crisp mountain air, clear blue skies, and mild days. By mid-October, chinar foliage in Naseem Bagh and Shalimar Bagh turns fiery amber and crimson. November brings the first winter freeze, with night temperatures dropping to 1°C in Srinagar and below zero in Gulmarg.

Packing & Gear Questions
Kashmir Packing List: Frequently Asked Questions
What should I pack for Kashmir in December and January?
In December and January (Chillai Kalan), daily temperatures range from -3°C to 7°C in Srinagar and drop to -10°C in Gulmarg. Follow the 3-layer rule: (1) Thermal innerwear (Forclaz Merino or synthetic, never pure cotton), (2) a fleece jacket or warm sweater, and (3) a hooded windproof and water-resistant parka. Add woollen socks, waterproof ski gloves, and a fleece-lined beanie.
Do I need to buy expensive snow boots before visiting Kashmir?
No. You do not need to buy heavy snow gumboots in advance. At Tangmarg (the base town before Gulmarg) and Sonamarg, government-registered rental shops provide knee-high waterproof snow gumboots for ₹150–₹250 per day. For everyday walking in Srinagar and hotel grounds, bring comfortable water-resistant sneakers or trail shoes with good rubber grip.
Can I rent warm snow jackets and suits in Gulmarg?
Yes. Full-body waterproof snow suits and heavy parkas are rented widely across Tangmarg and Gulmarg taxi stands for ₹250–₹350 per day. They are clean and ideal for a single day of snow play or sledging. However, bring your own personal thermal base layers, socks, and gloves for hygiene and warmth.
Will our mobile phone network work in Kashmir?
Only nationwide postpaid SIM cards (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) work in Jammu & Kashmir due to telecom security regulations. All prepaid connections purchased outside J&K are automatically blocked upon entry. Ensure at least one family member carries a postpaid SIM before departing.
What should I pack for children and senior citizens travelling in winter?
For children: Pack at least 3 sets of thermals, waterproof mittens with wrist straps, a balaclava covering the neck and ears, and moisturizing cream with SPF. For senior citizens: Pack lightweight electric heating pouches or air-activated hand warmers, anti-skid rubber shoe grips, personal medications for 10 days, and thermal base layers that are easy to put on.
What is the dress code for visiting Hazratbal, Jamia Masjid and temples?
Kashmir is culturally conservative. While there is no rigid tourist dress code, modest attire covering shoulders and knees is strongly appreciated everywhere. When entering Muslim shrines (such as Hazratbal or Dargah) and temples, both men and women must cover their heads with a scarf, stole, or cap, and remove footwear at the entrance.
