The honest version
Doodhpathri, the “valley of milk”, is a broad meadow cut by the Shaliganga river, around one and a half to two hours from Srinagar. Families picnic by the water, ponies take you up to the higher meadows, and in early summer the snow lingers on the ridges above.
Yusmarg sits in the Pir Panjal foothills, about the same distance away on a different road. It is a pine-ringed meadow with the Doodh Ganga river, and a walk of a few kilometres to the small Nilnag lake. The road passes Charar-e-Sharief, the shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani, Kashmir’s patron saint.
Facilities at both are basic: a few huts, local tea stalls and pony operators. That is the appeal. We usually plan them as day trips from a Srinagar hotel, which keeps the evenings comfortable.
