A private cab with a driver who knows the roads is how most people see Kashmir. Here is what to book, how fares work, and the local rules that catch visitors out.

The short answer
For sightseeing in Kashmir you hire a cab with a driver, by the day or for a single transfer. The fare depends on the route (Srinagar local, Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg), the vehicle and the season, and covers the driver and fuel. Two local rules matter: in Pahalgam, Aru, Betaab valley and Chandanwari are visited in the local union taxis, and at Sonamarg the drive beyond the town is by local taxi too. We book cabs from Srinagar with drivers we work with every season, and confirm the fare in writing before you book.

Luggage, not seats, is the usual problem. Tell us how many large suitcases you have.
| Route | Booked as | Time on the road |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Dal Lake or your hotel | Transfer | 30–45 min |
| Srinagar local sightseeing: gardens, Shankaracharya, Hazratbal, old city | Full day | Within the city |
| Srinagar – Gulmarg – Srinagar | Day trip | 1.5–2 h each way |
| Srinagar – Sonamarg – Srinagar | Day trip | 2.5–3 h each way |
| Srinagar – Pahalgam | Drop, or day trip | 2.5–3 h each way |
| Srinagar – Doodhpathri – Srinagar | Day trip | 1.5–2 h each way |
| Srinagar to Jammu or Katra | One-way drop | 6–8 h |
Distances are by road and approximate. Drive times assume normal traffic and open roads; snow, landslides and convoy timings in summer can add hours.

Questions
It depends on the vehicle and the season. A day trip (Srinagar – Gulmarg – Srinagar) costs more than a one-way drop, and an Innova more than a sedan. Send us your date and we will quote the fare.
No. In Pahalgam those trips are made in the local union taxis from the Pahalgam stand. Your cab drops you in Pahalgam or waits there.
Yes, and it is the easiest way to travel: one vehicle and one driver from the airport pickup to the drop, with the fare quoted for the whole trip.
About 14 km, 30 to 45 minutes by car.
Yes, as a one-way drop or as the start of a tour. Our guide to Katra and Jammu to Srinagar compares the cab with the train.
