Kashmir guide · Srinagar sightseeing

Places to visit in Srinagar, and how to fit them in.

Srinagar is more than the lake: gardens, shrines and an old city most visitors drive straight past. Here is what is worth your time, and the order that works.

The short answer

Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens and the old city, over two days.

The places to visit in Srinagar are Dal Lake (a shikara ride and a houseboat night), the Mughal gardens of Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi with Pari Mahal above them, Hazratbal shrine on the lake’s north shore, Shankaracharya temple on the hill, and the old city around Jamia Masjid and Khanqah-e-Moula. In spring, add the Tulip Garden. Two full days covers it at a comfortable pace; one day covers the lake and the gardens.

Srinagar in one day

  1. Morning

    The gardens

Shalimar, Nishat and Chashme Shahi along the east shore, before the tour groups arrive.

  2. Midday

    Pari Mahal and lunch

The view from Pari Mahal, then a Kashmiri lunch in town.

  3. Afternoon

    Hazratbal

The shrine and the north shore of the lake.

  4. Evening

    Shikara on Dal Lake

An hour on the water at sunset, ending at your houseboat or the Boulevard.

With a second day

Spend the morning in the old city with a guide: Jamia Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula on the Jhelum, the bridges and the papier-mâché and walnut workshops. Climb to Shankaracharya temple in the afternoon for the view over the whole city, or take a quieter shikara ride on Nigeen Lake. Early risers can take a shikara to the floating vegetable market at dawn.

Places to visit near Srinagar

  • Pampore, about 15 km: the saffron fields, in flower for a few weeks from late October.
  • Kheer Bhawani at Tulmulla, about 25 km: the spring temple.
  • Manasbal Lake, about 30 km: quiet, with lotus in late summer.
  • Doodhpathri, about 42 km, and Yusmarg, about 47 km: meadows and pine forest, easy day trips.
  • Gulmarg, about 50 km: the Gondola and the meadows.
  • Wular Lake, about 55 km: one of the largest freshwater lakes in India.

Before you go

  • The Mughal gardens charge a small entry fee and close in the evening. Go in the morning for the light and the quiet.
  • There are security checks at the hill temple and at some shrines. Carry as little as you can.
  • Dress modestly at Hazratbal and in the old city. Women should carry a scarf.
  • The Boulevard is slow in the evening in peak season: plan the shikara ride, not the drive, for sunset.

Questions

What people ask us.

How many days are enough for Srinagar?+

Two full days to see the lake, the gardens and the old city at a comfortable pace, plus a houseboat night. One day covers the lake and the gardens.

What is the best time to visit Srinagar?+

April to June and September to October. Late March and April for the blossom and the Tulip Garden; October for the chinars turning red.

Which Mughal garden is the best?+

Nishat is the largest and has the best lake views; Shalimar is the older and calmer of the two. Pari Mahal is not a garden in the same sense, but has the best view of all.

Is Srinagar good for a honeymoon?+

Yes: a houseboat night, a sunset shikara ride and the gardens are what most couples come for. Nigeen Lake is quieter than Dal.
