Since the railway reached the valley, Katra and Jammu are the easiest way into Kashmir from the north. Here is how the train, the highway and a taxi compare.

The short answer
Take the Vande Bharat: about 3 hours from Katra, under 5 from Jammu.
The Vande Bharat Express runs from Jammu Tawi through Katra to Srinagar: about 3 hours from Katra and about 4 hours 50 minutes from Jammu Tawi, over the new bridges and through the tunnels of the mountain railway. By road, Srinagar is about 250 km from Jammu on the national highway, 6 to 8 hours by car, and about 270 km from Katra. A private taxi suits families with a lot of luggage and anyone who wants to stop on the way.

By train: the Vande Bharat Express
The Vande Bharat runs from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, stopping at Katra and Banihal, with a morning and an afternoon departure on most days. Since May 2026 it starts at Jammu Tawi; before that, trains to Srinagar started at Katra.
Book on the official railway site or app as early as you can for May, June and the holiday weeks. Allow time for a security check before boarding, and keep luggage to what you can lift onto the rack.

By road: the Jammu–Srinagar highway
The national highway runs about 250 km from Jammu to Srinagar: through Udhampur and the Chenani–Nashri tunnel, past Ramban to Banihal, under the Pir Panjal through the Navyug tunnel to Qazigund, then down the valley past Anantnag. In normal conditions it is 6 to 8 hours by car. From Katra it is about 270 km, 7 to 8 hours.
The stretch around Ramban is where delays happen: landslides after heavy rain, and snow near Banihal in winter. Leave early, travel in daylight and check the road status the day before. From Udhampur, the highway is the simplest way in, about 185 km to Srinagar.
Distances are by road and approximate. Drive times assume normal traffic and open roads; snow, landslides and convoy timings in summer can add hours.
By taxi: a private cab from Katra or Jammu
- Door to door: pickup at your Katra or Jammu hotel, the railway station or Jammu airport; drop at your hotel or houseboat in Srinagar.
- Fares are per vehicle and depend on the vehicle and the season. A one-way drop is priced for the driver’s empty return.
- Worth it for families with luggage, older travellers who would rather not change trains, and anyone who wants to stop at Patnitop or for lunch on the way.
- The same cab can stay with you for the whole Kashmir trip, which saves arranging a second cab in Srinagar.
Which should you choose?
- Travelling light, or just back from the Vaishno Devi yatra at Katra: the train. It is the fastest and the most comfortable.
- A family with suitcases, or a group: a taxi or a Tempo Traveller from your hotel.
- Short on time: fly. Short flights connect Jammu and Srinagar; check current schedules.
- Want to see the mountains: the road, in daylight.
