A Kashmir trip plan that works on the road.

How many days Kashmir really needs, and three day-by-day plans built around actual drive times from Srinagar, not a map.

The short answer

Five to seven days for a first trip.

Three days gets you Srinagar and one day trip, usually Gulmarg. Five days (four nights) covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam without rushing. Seven days adds Sonamarg and a night in Pahalgam, which is when the trip stops feeling like a schedule. Add two nights for Gurez, or two for South Kashmir’s springs.

3-day Kashmir itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Srinagar

Airport to Dal Lake is 30 to 45 minutes. Afternoon at Nishat and Shalimar gardens, evening shikara on Dal Lake, night on a houseboat.

  2. Day 2

    Gulmarg day trip

About 50 km, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Ride the Gondola (book tickets ahead in season), walk the meadow, back to Srinagar by evening.

  3. Day 3

    Old city and departure

Morning in the old city or Hazratbal if your flight allows, then the airport. Allow extra time for the security checks at the airport entrance.

5-day Kashmir itinerary (4 nights)

  1. Day 1

    Srinagar

Arrive, Mughal gardens, shikara at sunset. Houseboat or hotel.

  2. Day 2

    Gulmarg

Day trip with the Gondola. Back to Srinagar.

  3. Day 3

    Srinagar to Pahalgam

About 95 km, 2.5 to 3 hours, via the saffron fields at Pampore and the Awantipora ruins. Evening by the Lidder river.

  4. Day 4

    Pahalgam valleys

Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari by the local union taxi (your own car cannot go). Back to Srinagar in the afternoon so the last day is easy.

  5. Day 5

    Departure

    Morning free, airport transfer.

7-day Kashmir itinerary (6 nights)

  1. Day 1

    Arrive, Dal Lake

Gardens and a shikara ride. Houseboat night.

  2. Day 2

    Srinagar slowly

Old city, Jamia Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula, Hazratbal and a walk through the markets. Hotel in Srinagar.

  3. Day 3

    Sonamarg day trip

About 80 km, 2.5 to 3 hours. Thajiwas glacier by pony or on foot.

  4. Day 4

    Gulmarg, overnight

Stay up in Gulmarg so you have the meadow before the day-trippers arrive and after they leave.

  5. Day 5

    Gulmarg to Pahalgam

The longest drive of the trip, about 4.5 to 5 hours via Srinagar. Leave early.

  6. Day 6

    Pahalgam valleys

Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari by union taxi, or a riverside walk.

  7. Day 7

    Pahalgam to the airport

About 3 hours. Avoid booking a flight before about 1 pm on this day.

Mistakes that waste a day

  • Trying Gulmarg and Pahalgam on the same day. They are on opposite sides of Srinagar.
  • Booking an early flight out of Pahalgam or Gulmarg. Spend the last night in Srinagar or book a later flight.
  • Planning Gurez before May or after October. The road over Razdan pass is closed in winter.
  • Assuming your cab goes everywhere. At Pahalgam and Sonamarg, sightseeing beyond the town is by the local union’s taxis at fixed rates.
  • Packing every day full. Kashmir rewards a free afternoon on the lake more than a fourth viewpoint.

Distances are by road and approximate. Drive times assume normal traffic and open roads; snow, landslides and convoy timings in summer can add hours.

Questions

What people ask us.

Is 4 days enough for Kashmir?+

For Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, yes, with a couple of long days. Five to six nights is more comfortable.

Should we stay in Gulmarg and Pahalgam or do day trips?+

Gulmarg works as a day trip; Pahalgam is far enough that one or two nights there is better. Staying in Gulmarg overnight is worth it in winter or if you want the meadow quiet.

Can we add Ladakh to a Kashmir trip?+

Yes, by road over Zojila from Sonamarg, usually May to October. Allow at least four extra nights; our Srinagar to Leh road trip is built for it.

Do you change these itineraries?+

Always. These are starting points. We reshape every plan around your dates, flights, group and pace before quoting.
