The short answer
Ahmedabad has direct flights to Srinagar of about two and a half hours. From Vadodara (about 2 hours by road to Ahmedabad) or Surat (about 4 to 5 hours), either drive to Ahmedabad for the direct flight or connect through Delhi or Mumbai. Pure-vegetarian food is easy across Kashmir, and we arrange Jain meals with hotels in advance.

For families with elders, the direct Ahmedabad flight is worth the drive from Vadodara: one flight, no connection to miss.

Kashmiri cuisine is famous for its meat dishes, which worries many Gujarati families before they travel. In practice, Srinagar has long-established pure-vegetarian restaurants, every hotel we use serves vegetarian meals, and Kashmiri vegetarian dishes such as dum aloo, nadru (lotus stem) and haak are excellent.
Jain food without onion, garlic or root vegetables needs advance notice. Tell us at the time of booking and we confirm it with every hotel on your route before you travel, so you are not explaining it at each check-in.
The Diwali break and the summer holidays are when most Gujarati families travel, and both are peak weeks in Kashmir. Diwali usually falls in late October or November: autumn colour, cold nights and the first snow at altitude. Pack proper winter layers for a Diwali trip.
