The short answer
Yatra first, train to Srinagar, fly home from Srinagar.
Fly or take the train to Jammu or Katra, spend two nights in Katra for the yatra, then take the morning Vande Bharat from Katra to Srinagar, about 3 hours. From Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are day trips or short stays, and you fly home from Srinagar. By road the same leg is about 270 km, 7 to 8 hours, which suits families with a lot of luggage. A seven-night plan
Day 1
Jammu to Katra
Pickup at Jammu, about 1.5 hours to Katra, RFID cards. See registration.

The yatra
Banganga to the Bhawan (about 13 km), darshan, Bhairon, back to Katra. See the trek route.

Why the yatra first
Doing the climb at the start, while everyone is fresh, keeps the valley days for the valley. It also means you fly home from Srinagar instead of going back to Jammu.

How many days for Vaishno Devi and Kashmir?
Five nights is the minimum to do both without rushing: two in Katra, three in Srinagar. Seven or eight nights adds Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
How do we get from Katra to Srinagar?
By the Vande Bharat train in about 3 hours, or about 270 km by road in 7 to 8 hours.
