The short answer
Srinagar to Pahalgam is about 95 km, a 2.5 to 3 hour drive.
From central Srinagar the road follows the Jammu–Srinagar highway south past Pampore and Awantipora, leaves it near Anantnag, and climbs beside the Lidder river to Pahalgam. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours without stops; most people take longer, because the stops are half the point. There is no railway to Pahalgam, so the trip is by car.

The route, stop by stop

In order from Srinagar. None of these needs more than half an hour, so pick two or three.
About 15 km
Pampore
The saffron fields on the plateau either side of the highway. They flower for a few weeks from late October; the rest of the year Pampore is the place to buy saffron from the growers’ shops.
On the highway
Awantipora
The ruins of the Avantiswami temple, built in the 9th century by King Avantivarman, a few minutes off the road.
Before Bijbehara
The willow belt
Roadside workshops make cricket bats from Kashmir willow, with stacks of drying clefts outside. Most will show you how a bat is made.
Near Anantnag
Martand Sun Temple (detour)
The great 8th-century temple ruins near Mattan, a short detour from the Pahalgam road and one of the finest sites in Kashmir.
On the Pahalgam road
Aishmuqam
The hilltop shrine of the Sufi saint Zain-ud-Din Wali, above the road where it starts to climb.
Last stretch
Along the Lidder
The road follows the Lidder river up through the pines into Pahalgam, with places to stop by the water.
When to drive
- Leave Srinagar by about 8 or 9 in the morning, so you reach Pahalgam with the afternoon free for Betaab or the riverside.
- July and August: one of the two Amarnath Yatra routes starts from Pahalgam, so the road is busier, with yatra convoys and security checks. Allow extra time.
- Winter: Pahalgam is open, but drive in daylight. Snow on the valley floor in January and February makes the last stretch slower.
Distances are by road and approximate. Drive times assume normal traffic and open roads; snow, landslides and convoy timings in summer can add hours.
Taxis and the Pahalgam union
Most visitors go by private cab from Srinagar, as a transfer or as part of a tour. Current fares by vehicle are on our Kashmir taxi rates page.
One rule surprises people: a cab from Srinagar can take you to Pahalgam town, but not on to the side valleys. Aru, Betaab valley and Chandanwari are reserved for the Pahalgam taxi union, which runs them at fixed rates paid on the spot. Aru is about 12 km from Pahalgam and Chandanwari about 16 km.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip from Srinagar is possible, but it means five to six hours in the car for a few hours in Pahalgam, and no time for the side valleys. One night is the minimum we suggest; two nights let you do Aru and Betaab without rushing. If you are choosing between Pahalgam and Gulmarg for a short trip, read Gulmarg vs Pahalgam.
