Crucial winter rule: Tangmarg snow chains & 4x4 switch
Between late December and mid-March, snow and black ice cover the final 12 km road between Tangmarg and Gulmarg. Administration enforces safety regulations strictly:
- Snow chains: Two-wheel-drive sedans without chained tyres are not permitted past the Tangmarg checkpoint during active snowfall.
- Chain fitment fee: Local mechanics fit chains at Tangmarg for ₹600–₹1,000 per vehicle roundtrip.
- Switching to 4x4: If road ice is severe, non-4x4 tourist cabs park at Tangmarg, and tourists hire a local Tangmarg Taxi Union 4x4 Gypsy or Sumo (standard fixed rate ₹1,500–₹2,000 return).
- Timing your return: Descend from Gulmarg before 4:30 PM in winter to avoid descending black ice in sub-zero darkness.
Shared cabs and buses: budget options
Budget travellers can reach Gulmarg for under ₹200 per person using shared taxis:
1. From Srinagar: Take a shared cab from Batamaloo or Parimpora bus stand to Magam or Tangmarg (₹80–₹100).
2. From Tangmarg: Board a shared Sumo up to Gulmarg meadow (₹50–₹70 in summer; in winter 4x4 union rates apply).
