Trout fishing in Kashmir.

Fly fishing for brown trout in the snow-fed streams around Pahalgam, Sonamarg and south Kashmir, from April to September. You book your permit with the Fisheries Department; we plan the trip around it.

Season

Usually April to September

Permit

One day, one beat, booked online

Method

Artificial fly only

Who books

You, with the Department

The short answer

You book the permit with the Fisheries Department. We plan the rest.

Trout angling in Kashmir is controlled by the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Fisheries. The season usually runs from April to September, and the Department announces the dates each spring. You need a permit for every day you fish: each one is for a named stretch of river, called a beat, is booked online on the Department’s angling portal, and cannot be transferred. The Department warns anglers against agents and touts, so we do not sell permits. We plan the trip around the beats you book: where to stay, transport to the water, timing for the snowmelt and the rest of the holiday.

How the permits work

  1. Step 1

    Read this year’s notice

Each spring the Department publishes the season dates, the rules and the booking process on fisheries.jk.gov.in.

  2. Step 2

    Pick your dates and areas

Tell us when you can travel and we suggest which areas suit the month and where to stay for them.

  3. Step 3

    Book your beats

You book each day’s permit on the Department’s angling portal, angling.jkfisheries.co.in, in your own name. Beats go first come, first served, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.

  4. Step 4

    Carry it on the water

Carry the permit and your photo ID while fishing; the Department’s staff check them.

  5. Step 5

    We plan around it

Stays near the beats, early pickups, a driver who waits, and the rest of the trip for anyone not fishing.

The rules in recent notices

  • Artificial flies only. All natural bait, dead or alive, is banned.
  • One rod per angler.
  • A daily bag limit: six fish in recent notices.
  • Permits are personal: no sharing, sub-letting or transfer, and the fee is not refunded.

Rules can change from one season to the next. Read the current year’s notice before you book.

Where to fish

Which beats are open changes each season; the Department’s portal shows what you can book.

Sonamarg and KanganThe SindhSonamarg, or Srinagar (about 80 km)A day trip from Srinagar, or a night in Sonamarg for an early start.

When to go

April and May bring snowmelt and high water. The Department’s recent notices suggest the lower beats early in the season and the higher ones once the water settles. From June to September the streams are steadier; September adds cooler days and fewer visitors in Pahalgam.

On warm days snowmelt raises the flow through the afternoon, so mornings are often the better session.

What to bring

  • Your own fly tackle: rod, reel, lines, leaders and flies. Plan on bringing everything; we cannot promise hire locally.
  • Waders or wading boots with a good grip: the rocks are slippery and the water is cold snowmelt.
  • Layers and a rain shell: mornings by the river are cold even in summer.
  • Original photo ID, which you need with the permit.

A sample plan: five nights, three days on the water

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Srinagar

Airport pickup and a night on a houseboat or lakeside hotel.

  2. Day 2

    The Sindh

An early drive towards Sonamarg, about 80 km, for your Sindh beat, and back to Srinagar.

  3. Day 3

    Srinagar to Pahalgam

About 95 km, 2.5 to 3 hours, via the saffron fields at Pampore. Evening by the Lidder.

  4. Day 4

    The Lidder

A full day on your Lidder beat.

  5. Day 5

    Lidder or south Kashmir

A second Lidder beat, or the streams around Kokernag and Daksum.

  6. Day 6

    Back to Srinagar

    For the flight home.

When a fishing trip to Kashmir is not for you

If you want to fish with spinners or bait, keep everything you catch, or turn up and borrow gear, Kashmir is not the place. It is fly fishing only, by permit, by the day, under the Department’s rules. If that suits you, it is some of the most beautiful trout water in India.
