Srinagar to Sonamarg in Winter: 2026 Road Status & Day Trip Guide

The newly operational 6.5 km Z-Morh Tunnel has transformed winter travel to Sonamarg from an impossible avalanche hazard into a seamless 2.5-hour day trip from Srinagar. Here is the complete route guide.

Distance

80 km from Dal Lake, Srinagar

Average Drive Time

2 hours 15 mins via Z-Morh Tunnel

Key Landmark

6.5 km Z-Morh Tunnel (bypasses Hung avalanches)

Return Cab Fare

₹3,500–₹4,500 (Sedan / Innova direct)

The short answer

The Srinagar-to-Sonamarg highway is now open every day of winter thanks to the Z-Morh Tunnel, making it one of the most magnificent day excursions in the Himalayas.

Prior to 2024, the highway to Sonamarg was closed by police at Gagangir from mid-December through late March due to high-velocity avalanche chutes at Hung. The completion of the 6.5 km bi-directional Z-Morh Tunnel bypasses this entire hazard zone underground. Travelers can comfortably depart Srinagar at 8:30 AM, reach Sonamarg by 11:00 AM, spend 3 to 4 hours playing on the snowfields of Thajiwas Glacier and enjoying hot kahwa along the frozen Sindh River, and return to their heated Srinagar hotel before 5:00 PM.

Route Breakdown: Srinagar to Sonamarg Step-by-Step

The drive follows National Highway 1 (NH-1), the historic gateway connecting Kashmir with Ladakh. The road is asphalted and maintained diligently by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

  • **Srinagar to Ganderbal (22 km, ~35 mins)**: Exit Dal Gate through Hazratbal or 90 Feet Road. Smooth four-lane transition out of the city bowl.
  • **Ganderbal to Kangan (20 km, ~30 mins)**: Enter the Sindh Valley. The road follows the turquoise Sindh river through willow and walnut groves.
  • **Kangan to Gagangir (28 km, ~45 mins)**: Scenic ascent into dramatic rocky gorges. Gagangir is the last major settlement with reliable cafes and clean washrooms.
  • **Z-Morh Tunnel to Sonamarg (10 km, ~20 mins)**: Enter the 6.5 km engineering marvel that emerges directly into the snow-covered alpine basin of Sonamarg at 2,740 metres.

Winter Vehicle Requirements & Verified Cab Fares

Unlike Gulmarg, where an intermediate vehicle switch is often enforced at Tangmarg, a private cab hired in Srinagar can take you all the way through the Z-Morh Tunnel into Sonamarg town.

What to Do During Your 4 Hours in Sonamarg

Because Sonamarg is a pristine alpine meadow in winter, activities focus on snow landscapes and raw nature rather than commercial shopping.

  • **Thajiwas Glacier Snow Sledging**: Local wooden sledges pulled by handlers glide across the glacier foothills. Negotiate firmly (₹500 to ₹800 per sledge).
  • **Snowmobile Rides**: Available on the open flats near the tourist center during peak snowfall months (January–February).
  • **Sindh River Frozen Shoreline**: Sip fresh saffron kahwa poured from traditional copper samovars by local vendors while watching the river rush beneath shelves of ice.
  • **Photography**: The panoramic view of Kolahoi glacier peaks towering over the white snowfield is among the finest photography locations in North India.

Essential Safety Rules for the Winter Drive

1. **Leave Early**: Never leave Srinagar after 9:30 AM. Sunset occurs by 5:15 PM in December and January, and mountain shadow causes black ice to form on exposed bridges.

2. **Dress in Waterproof Outer Layers**: Snow in Sonamarg is waist-deep off the cleared road. Waterproof snow boots and thermal gloves are mandatory.

3. **Mobile Network**: Postpaid Jio, Airtel, and BSNL provide 4G/5G connectivity throughout the Sindh Valley and at Sonamarg town. Prepaid SIM cards from other Indian states will not function in J&K.
